Who’ll watch Watchmen?

For those of you who don't know; the film adaption of Watchmen is scheduled for UK release in March. And I expect that there are not many of you who don't. Regardless of any advertising efforts by the film company (Warner Bros.), pretty much everyone who is going to see this movie will already be in eager anticipation of its release. Last year alone the paperback of Watchmen sold more than half-a-million copies; not bad for a 22 year old comic-book!

Watchmen was written by Alan Moore (Many will have seen a previous adaptation of Moore's work: V for Vendetta) and is a deconstruction of the superhero concept. The title, Watchmen, is taken to be a reference to "Who will watch the watchmen?", a question posed by the Roman satirist Juvenal to highlight the problem of controlling those who hold power and quoted repeatedly within the work itself. The film adaptation is in the capable hands of Zach Snyder; the man who did such a wonderful job with Frank Miller's 300.

So, who'll watch Watchmen? Well, I will for a start, and in my opinion a lot of other people will too; no doubt this will be a "surprise" box-office hit for 2009...assuming, of course, that Hollywood doesn't dash expectations in the way that it so often does.

I'll try to remember to update you with my thoughts after I've seen the film. Let me know what you think too.
